Australia’s beloved Portuguese-themed fast-food chain Oporto is spreading its wings again—this time landing in Griffith, New South Wales, with a brand-new franchise restaurant opening in July 2025. Known for its crave-worthy flame-grilled chicken, Bondi Burgers, and spicy Rappas, the brand’s arrival signals continued growth in regional franchise development—and presents new opportunities for local entrepreneurs and job seekers alike.
A Welcome Addition to Griffith’s Food Scene
Located at 49 Jondaryan Avenue, the new 240-square-metre Oporto outlet will take over the former Hungry Jack’s site, next to the Collier & Miller business premises. This new venture will be operated by two local businesspeople under Oporto’s franchise program.
“Griffith locals have had to travel considerable distances to enjoy our fresh and crave-worthy Portuguese chicken and burgers,” said Oporto CEO Therese Frangie. “We’re thrilled to soon be giving the people of Griffith access to our delicious flame-grilled chicken, burgers, Rappas and bowls—and of course, our iconic Bondi Burger.”
Local Investment and Community Impact
Leased through Griffith Real Estate, the site is undergoing renovations ahead of the July opening. According to property records, the land was last sold for $3.4 million in 2016 and previously rented at $3,300 per week when operated by Hungry Jack’s.
“It’s in an excellent location which has been synonymous with fast food over a number of years,” said real estate agent Brian Bertolin. “It’s good that big multinational franchises see Griffith as a place to expand to.”
The new restaurant is expected to create around 40 local jobs, with hiring underway for roles including restaurant manager, assistant manager, shift supervisor, and team members.
Oporto’s Ongoing Expansion in Australia
Founded in Bondi in 1986 by António Cerqueira, an Australian of Portuguese heritage, Oporto has grown to over 200 locations across Australia and New Zealand. Its continued regional growth demonstrates strong demand for Portuguese-style fast food and solidifies its position among the top-tier chicken franchise opportunities in the region.
Oporto is also slated to open another outlet soon in Wagga Wagga, making its flame-grilled flavors more accessible across regional NSW.
